NEST + CREATE … with a summer of designs for the mill inn + cafe

The Mill Inn + Cafe in Dover Foxcroft, Maine is officially open for business! It’s been a crazy busy summer working on the design, but so exciting to finally see it in person. Here’s a great video of the redevelopment of the entire mill that includes a boutique inn, cafe, offices, apartments, and a large event space.

Above are two versions of the logo for the branding of the mill. The one on the right with the fabric background was inspired by the Mill’s history as a textile manufacturing mill.

As I mentioned in a previous blog post, my talented friend and artist Erin Arnold and I went on a trip to Maine earlier this summer scouting for found objects for the inn rooms and the cafe. We discovered some great finds including vintage buoys, oars, fishing bobbers, wooden spindles, and wooden snowshoes. Here’s one more moodboard from the beginning of the project.

After searching for the artwork and found objects for the decor we enjoyed a fantastic sampling of food prepared by Natasha of Spruce Mill Farms and select meats/cheeses from Riverside Meat Market in Dexter, Maine.

The headboards, bedside shelves, benches, and consoles in the Inn rooms were built with locally sourced pine in Dover Foxcroft. The wood was cut with a circular saw from the 1930’s that leaves a distinguishing “saw scar” (the arcs on the face of the wood).

Here are a few of the busy workers building table bases, finishing shelves, and prepping the day before the ribbon cutting.

All of the incredibly well-crafted cafe tabletops were handbuilt and stamped by John Wentworth of John Wentworth Custom Furniture (former owner of Moosehead Manufacturing, the furniture company that was previously in the Mill). On the right is a sample succulent arrangement for the cafe tables.
